RESIDENTS in Wirral are organising a memorial tribute in memory of Haydn Griffiths who went missing while swimming in the River Mersey off New Brighton.

Haydn, who turned 24 on Friday, went missing at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, July 19.

An extensive search operation was carried out by the RNLI, police, and firefighters, led by the Coastguard.

Officers investigating the disappearance confirmed today that a man's body was found last night at around 8pm on Sunday, July 24.

Throughout the tragic series of events, residents from across the borough joined in the search to help find Haydn.

Now they have come together to offer their support to Haydn’s family and friends by organising a vigil.

Posting a statement on Facebook, residents shared the details of the tribute which is set to take place at Derby Pool in New Brighton.

It said: “We are organising a memorial tribute in unity of love. Shining a light for healing by candlelight for Haydn Griffiths.

“Derby pool New Brighton, Bayview Drive, Wallasey CH45 3QS (car park) on Monday, August 1 at 6pm.

“All are more than welcome to attend as a show of love and moral support for Haydn and his family. Let’s remember him with love.

“Please bring candles and loving memories that you have shared with Haydn. There will be music from his favourite bands.”

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help support Haydn’s family which has raised £1,300.

Fundraiser organiser Clare Quirk posted an update to those who had donated.

She said: “It is with a heavy heart we have found Haydn last night.

“Haydn will be forever in our hearts. Please continue to donate as all money raised will be put towards Haydn’s memory.

“The family will decide whether to use towards his funeral, a memorial bench, safety signs or ladders.”
