A MAN kicked three cars and shouted homophobic abuse in a street after getting 10 out of 10 drunk at this brother’s funeral.

Simon Wood, of Boundary Lane North, in Cuddington, said he was 'disgusted' with himself after the late-night incident on March 22 this year.

The 50-year-old was appearing at Chester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 5, after pleading guilty to four counts of criminal damage and one of using threatening and abusive behaviour.

Emily Comer, prosecuting, told the court it was about 11.30pm when the occupant of a home on Marshall Lane, Northwich, woke up to the sound of banging from outside.

“She looked out of her window and saw the defendant kicking out at a car belonging to her next-door neighbour,” she said.

“He then made his way over to her driveway and began kicking her car and one belonging to her son.

“When the woman’s son opened the front door, the defendant ran towards him shouting vile homophobic abuse.

“He quickly closed the door, but the defendant kicked it several times.

“It was at that point the police were called and Wood was arrested nearby.”

Ms Comer told the court how Wood was then interviewed by police officers, telling them he had been at his brother’s funeral earlier that day.

“He said his level of intoxication was 10 out of 10,” she added.

“When he was asked about the details of what happened, he said he couldn’t remember.

“His last conviction was for drug driving in February 2020.”

Stevie Lumb, defending, said her client was clearly in an emotional state having just attended the funeral of his younger brother – who had taken his own life.

“He drank to excess, and he tells me he only drinks once in a blue moon,” she said.

“He acted out of character and has apologised profusely for his actions on this occasion.

“His behaviour was down to the impact of this awful and tragic event.”

Magistrates told Wood they were disappointed he was back in court following his last offence in February 2020.

Wood told them: “I’m disgusted in myself sir.”

He was given a 12-month community order during which time he must complete up to 35 days of a rehabilitative activity.

He must also pay a fine of £120, £270 in compensation, as well as £85 in court costs and a £95 surcharge.
