AN investigation has been launched after a prisoner died at HMP Styal in Cheshire.

The Prison Service confirmed the death of Eileen McDonagh at the all-women prison on Saturday, July 2.

As a result of her death, the matter has been referred to the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

The ombudsman is an independent body that carries out investigations into those who die while in custody.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Styal prisoner Eileen McDonagh died in custody on July 2 and our condolences are with her family.

“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

A Prisons and Probation Ombudsman spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been notified of Ms McDonagh’s death and we are investigating this.

“We are unable to say how long the investigation will take, but we will publish the final report on our website once the inquest has concluded: https://www.ppo.gov.uk/document/fii-report/.”
