A MAN has been arrested following a crash involving multiple vehicles on the M53.

At about 9.20pm on Sunday, May 22, the motorway was closed near Ellesmere Port after the driver of a blue BMW crashed into a blue Honda Accord.

Emergency services attended the scene of the collision between Junctions nine and 10.

Both directions of the motorway were closed while traffic was diverted.

North West Ambulance Service took two men to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Police have now confirmed that the BMW driver was arrested on suspicion of being unfit through drink or drugs.

Police have said that the man, 36, from Widnes, was arrested on suspicion of being unfit through drink or drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in custody assisting police with enquiries.

A 55-year-old man who was the driver of the Honda remains in hospital where his condition is described as stable.
