MOTORISTS are being warned that the M56 between junctions 12 and 14 is currently closed due to a police incident.

Cheshire Police took to social media in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, May 19) to say the motorway in closed in both directions.

The tweet also stated: "There is heavy traffic in both directions on M56 approaching junctions 14 and 12 due to a closure in both directions for an ongoing incident.

"Where possible please plan an alternative route and avoid the area.

"Traffic on the A56 through Frodsham is heavy however is moving slowly."

The National Highways: North-West official Twitter account @HighwaysNWEST also posted the following bulletin at 3.20am: "The #M56 near #Runcorn is closed in both directions from J12 to J14 due to a police led incident. 

"@cheshirepolice are at the scene and dealing (with the situation) along with #TrafficOfficers who are assisting with traffic management."

The police have updated the situation by saying officers are currently in the process of reopening the section of the M56 in both directions.
