The Chester Folk Festival will return to the picturesque village of Kelsall later this month, after two successful years of online performances.

For more than 40 years the event has celebrated folk music in the borough, with this year's showing on the 27-29 May the festival's first in the flesh since before the pandemic.

The organisers have announced the line-up for this year’s celebration of all that's best in traditional and acoustic music, and have enticed a host of talented singers, dancers and musicians to the village.

The festival is set to be a mixture of concerts, featuring some of the biggest names around, with more informal events such as ceilidhs, dance displays, sessions and workshops.

There is also a craft fair and a full programme of children’s entertainment, including things like circus skills and Punch & Judy, provided by Panic Circus.

This year the festival headliners include False Lights (Saturday), Reg Meuross (Saturday & Sunday), Melrose Quartet (Saturday & Sunday), Trials of Cato (Sunday) and Granny’s Attic (Friday).

Saturday's top billing, False Lights feature some of the best young folk musicians, with the band's BBC Folk Award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Carter also appearing solo at the festival.

Reg Meuross is described as one of the finest singer-songwriters and "most compelling and entertaining raconteurs performing on the folk circuit".

Melrose Quartet sees four great voices, twin fiddles, melodeon and guitar/bouzouki combine to create "a powerful musical experience that stands shoulder to shoulder with the best the folk world offers".

Trials of Cato are a remarkable, BBC Radio 2 award winning, trio who "pay clear homage to the tradition whilst twisting old bones into something febrile and modern, with stomping tunes and captivating stories".

Granny’s Attic are Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon, anglo concertina, vocals), George Sansome (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Wood (violin, vocals). Heralded for their lively performances and skilled delivery of traditional material, they play with verve, energy and their own inimitable style.

Day and evening tickets as well as full weekend tickets are available and can be purchased on the website www.chesterfolk.org.uk where you will also find lots more information or contact info@chesterfolk.org.uk.
