RETAIL company The Range has declined to comment on the fate of one its stores in Cheshire, after plans were lodged by rival retailer B&M to take over the building.

B&M has lodged an application with Halton Council which would allow it to vary the planning condition at the building currently being used by The Range at Widnes Trade Park on Earle Road, Widnes, so it can move in.

The change of use at the 4,532 sq m site would allow it to expand the amount of floor space designated for selling food and drink, as well as offer a greater variety of products. The application would also including the option of selling food at a café and the creation of a garden centre.

If given the go ahead, the current B&M nearby would close, with staff moving to the new site and an additional 45 jobs being created, taking the total workforce to between 75-85 staff.

The Range only opened in Widnes last February following the closure of its store in Halton Lea, with staff relocating from Runcorn being joined by 34 new employees. The company took over the building from B&Q

But The Range is staying tight lipped about whether it too will be relocating its operations in Widnes, or withdrawing from the town and borough altogether.

When contacted by the World about the plans, a spokesman for the Range said: “We have no comment on this matter.”

A planning statement submitted in support of the application, said: “There is an urgent need to create job opportunities now particularly given the scale of shop closures nationally, both within town centre and in out of centre locations.

“Private investment is needed to secure employment growth and the government is relying on private sector investment to stimulate the economy.”

It adds: “The general area has a customer base which comprises some less affluent households which are attracted to products that are offered at discount prices. However, B&M retail Ltd also appeals to more affluent households.

“This proposal is at a scale and format which will complement provision within the areas as part of established retail destination, whilst increasing choice and social inclusion in a sustainable manner.”

No date has yet been set for a decision.
