PARENTS are being reminded to alert children to the dangers of talking to strangers online.

The warning comes after a Cheshire pupil under the age of 13 signed up to the TikTok social media platform, which allows users to create short videos.

The age restriction for the TikTok app is 13.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Police were made aware that a child, under the age of 13, had created a fake TikTok account under a false name.

“The child has since been spoken to.”

Police say they are aware that some children aged under 13 are using TikTok with the consent of their parents.

Parents are reminded to find out of their children know all their followers and the people they follow.

A police spokesman said: “We teach children not to talk to strangers in the real world, but when it comes to social media, this is not even thought of.

“So are they talking to strangers online?

“Are the videos that your child is posting appropriate in relation to their age?

“TikTok is a public profile and anyone can see your child’s videos.

“Please help us to protect your child by simply monitoring what your child is doing on social media.”

Earlier this month police warned parents and carers to be vigilant after pupils at an unnamed Northwich school were exposed to ‘inappropriate material online’.
