The developer behind the Gleneagles Road and The Sutton pub housing development has responded after local community leaders expressed their frustration at delays to the project.
The Standard recently covered the comments from Ellesmere Port MP Justin Madders concerning the rundown "eyesore" and the assurances made by the new landowners, Sutton Ellesmere Port Ltd. Dan Anders, director for the company, has now offered an explanation for the ongoing difficulties.
Mr Anders said: "We continue to work behind the scenes and although it appears slow progress, an understatement to say the least, we are still unfortunately in the hands of the Local Authority."
Mr Anders says that a meeting with the commissioners for adult social care will take place today (Friday 25) and that a care provider is working with the local authority to determine the contractual arrangements.
"The remnants of the building were surveyed for asbestos just two weeks ago and are free, allowing a start on site within a matter of weeks, from receipt of the written support we require. The planning application was protected by making a lawful start on site last year and as such, only the confirmation now stands in the way of the project."
Sutton Ellesmere Port Ltd say that they hope to make a "full and meaningful start" to the project by early summer "at the latest".
MP Justin Madders had previously said that the delays to the project had not filled him or councillors Christine Warner and Peter Wheeler with confidence.
In a letter to the developer, Cllr Warner cited empty promises that had been made as early as November 2021 that the problem pub would be demolished with a view to redevelopment. The MP and the local councillors appear keen for a start date to be confirmed.
