A CHESHIRE animal charity is appealing to people to spread the love for rescue greyhounds this Valentine’s Day.

There are currently multiple greyhounds residing at Cheshire Dogs’ Home, in Grappenhall, while they wait for their forever home.

Home manager, Anna Stansfield, says: “Ex-racing greyhounds very often find themselves coming into shelters through no fault of their own.

“They’re great dogs who can make really lovely companions and ahead of Valentine’s Day we wanted to spread some love for them!

“At Cheshire Dogs’ Home we re-home all types of dogs, but this year we want to send out a Valentine’s message that greyhounds are very much in need of loving homes and a second chance in life. In return, they have a lot of love to give.”

Current greyhounds at the Grappenhall shelter who are looking for their forever homes include:

Chester and District Standard:

Four-year-old sweetie Rebel

Chester and District Standard:

 Chilled-out four-year-old Buddy

Chester and District Standard:

Lively three-year-old Jet

Chester and District Standard:

Energetic two-year-old Ty

Chester and District Standard:

Sweet-natured three-year-old Lark

Chester and District Standard:

Fun-loving five-year-old Uggy

Three-year-old Boss who has a very nervous personality so needs an adult-only home with patient and understanding owners who can help him have more confidence in the world.

All dogs are former racing greyhounds.

Because ex-racing greyhounds can have a very high prey drive due to their training, some of them may need to wear a muzzle on walks, and secure gardens are also a must for safe play.

Although greyhounds are rightly famous for their dazzling speed, they’re also very fond of snoozing on sofas - hence their nickname of “40mph couch potatoes”.

Even where ex-racing greyhounds have never lived in a home, they generally adapt well and two to three short walks a day suffices for them.

Their temperaments are typically quizzical, sometimes shy, often sensitive and surprisingly gentle.

Earlier this month former Cheshire Dogs’ Home resident Tucker, a retired racing greyhound, made the news after he donated blood that saved the life of a Warrington family’s much-loved spaniel.
