TRAFFIC has been brought to a standstill on the M56 in both directions due to a collision involving several vehicles.

The incident happened shortly after 8am on Tuesday, January 25 between junction 12 and 14 on the westbound carriageway.

National Highways say traffic is backed up for four miles, with delays to journeys inevitable.

Emergency services have been able to move the vehicles involved to a place of safety and traffic has began to move in all lanes, but there was still heavy congestion an a delay of around 50 minutes.

The agency tweeted: "The vehicles from the collision on M56 westbound between J12 Runcorn A557 and J14 Stanlow A5117 have been moved to safety.

"Traffic released in all lanes.

"There's approx four miles of congestion and a delay of 50 mins approaching the scene but these will begin easing now."
