FOUR more Covid patient deaths have been reported at the Countess of Chester Hospital Trust – in a week when Covid patient numbers topped 100 for the first time since February 2021.

The four patients' deaths were recorded on January 4, 8, 9 and 11.

The total number of Covid patient deaths recorded at the hospital trust since the beginning of the pandemic is now 663.

The news comes as the total number of Covid patients being treated there hit 101 on the morning of Monday, January 10, following a sharp rise in the number of Covid patient hospital admissions.

Latest available NHS data shows there were 97 Covid patients being treated at 8am on Tuesday, January 11.

Of the 97 Covid patients, three were using mechanical ventilator beds.

Despite the high total patients figure, this is still less than half the number being treated at the same point last year, when there were 258 Covid patients being treated on January 11, 2021.

The number of new cases being recorded in Cheshire West and Chester is also beginning to fall sharply, having reached a peak at the turn of the year when more than 2.3 per cent of the borough's population was testing positive for Covid in one week.

While rates are still high – 2.3 per cent of those aged 0-59 tested positive for Covid between January 2-8, compared to one per cent of those aged 60+ – it is looking increasingly likely the worst of the Omicron wave has passed.

While some may point to the lack of Covid test kits available recently as a possible reason for case numbers dipping, the amount of Covid testing in the area is still at a record high, with about 15,000 Covid tests being reported a day.

Nearly two-thirds of the Cheshire West and Chester population aged 12+ (64.8 per cent, or 211,262 people) has now had the Covid booster vaccine, with 81.1 per cent having had two Covid doses and 86.8 per cent having had one dose.
