RESIDENTS in a Cheshire village were left shocked by an "absolutely unbelievable" fly-tipping incident which saw caravans dumped.
On Sunday morning (January 9), residents of Dunham-on-the-Hill were confronted by the sight of a battered trailer and a dilapidated static caravan with a towing caravan placed on top, dumped overnight on Barrow Lane, a single-track road nearby to the village.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has now asked for witnesses to help officers discover what happened and find the culprits.
Keith Bradley, chair of Dunham Hill & Hapsford Parish Council, said: “This is a major, ongoing problem on Barrow Lane. What we have witnessed this morning is absolutely unbelievable.
The dumped caravans blocking Barrow Lane.
"This has been dumped on an 'S' bend on a single track lane which apart from anything else is a danger to unsuspecting drivers/cyclists driving from the village.
“Fly-tipping continues to wreck the lives for those of us living and working in the countryside.
“Significant progress needs to be made to stop fly tipping and we are calling on the council to investigate this ongoing issue further and to monitor fly-tipping within this problematic area more closely, including installing/providing CCTV.”
The council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, highways and strategic transport, Councillor Karen Shore, said: “Our officers are now investigating the site and arranging for the vehicles to be removed as soon as possible, after we were contacted by Cheshire Police’s Rural Crime Team. In the meantime, the lane has been closed as a safety precaution.
“There is no excuse for fly-tipping at all, it costs money to clear away and affects our communities, as well as potentially local wildlife. In this case it has also caused a dangerous obstruction on the road. We will take any steps necessary to find and prosecute offenders.
“If anyone saw these caravans in transit this weekend or has any information regarding this incident please get in touch.”
Anyone with information can report it to the Council’s Regulatory Services team on 01244 973708 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
If you discover illegal tipping of waste or see it being tipped, report it 24 hours a day on the council’s website or the ‘Report It’ app.
