SALTNEY hosted its first Dementia Awareness Awards ceremony in recognition to various local organisations which have become dementia friendly.

The event was held at the Douglas Place community centre last week - with honoured guests Lord Barry Jones and his wife, Lady Janet, Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Joe Johnson and mayor of Saltney, Councillor Aled Roberts all in attendance.

Lord Barry Jones presented the certificates on behalf of Saltney Steering Group,which has been working in partnership with Purple Platforms to deliver awareness training to community and businesses groups working towards getting Dementia Awareness Status for Saltney.

The training offered groups and organisations guidance and support to help make their environment a comfortable and friendly one for people living with dementia and their carers.

  • Saltney Methodist Church
  • Morrisons Supermarket
  • St Marks Church
  • Oddfellows Hall
  • Saltney Town Council
  • Saltney Ferry Scouts Group
  • Curzon House Residential
  • Douglas Place Community Centre and Lunch Club
  • Saltney Dental Practice

The scheme was also supported by Newcis and the Alzheimer’s Association charities.

Saltney Dementia Friendly Steering Group was originally set up in 2017 by Councillor Veronica Gay to help people living with dementia, and their families and carers who had nowhere locally to turn to and needed to travel across Flintshire to get support they needed.

Councillor Gay said: "We are very proud as this was a fantastic community team effort resulting in a great resource for people living with dementia and their carers.

"Covid-19 stopped a lot of our hands on community work but we continued to offer support through hosting on line chat sessions for anyone who wanted or could join us."
