The number people being treated for coronavirus in Wirral hospitals remains broadly the same, as the borough's weekly infection starts to reduce, latest figures show.

NHS England publishes hospital admissions data on a weekly basis. As of September 21, Wirral University Teaching Hospital had 38 beds occupied by inpatients with Covid.

That's down one patient from seven days earlier and the same level as a fortnight previous.

Of those 38 inpatients, three were on mechanical ventilation beds, also down one from a week earlier.

In total, 665 people have died with coronavirus at Wirral University Teaching Hospital since the pandemic began.

The most recent recorded was on September 21, with six fatalities recorded at Arrowe Park Hospital in the last seven days of published data.

The total number of deaths from COVID-19 across Wirral in hospitals, care homes and community settings now stands at 1,013.

Case rates start to fall again

Wirral's Covid weekly infection rate has started to reduce. According to Public Health England, in the seven days to September 19, the borough had a new case rate of 276.9 per 100,00 people, with 898 new cases.

That is down from a rate of 287.4 seven days earlier, when 932 people tested positive for the virus.

It also means that Wirral continues to have the lowest current rate of infection in the Liverpool City Region.

Wirral Council publishes data that shows which wards in Wirral have the most cases.

In the seven days to September 17, Bromborough had the most cases, on 62, with neighbouring Eastham on 55.

In between the south Wirral wards is Claughton, with 57 cases.

Heswall currently has the lowest, with 17 cases in the same seven day period.

Vaccine coverage

As of September 22, 83.8% of people eligible in Wirral have had at least one COVID-19 vaccination and 78.5% are fully vaccinated.
