THE ICONIC Spitfire fighter plane could be flying over Flintshire today (Friday).

Chocks Away Diner, based at Hawarden Airport, has posted on its social media page to say that the legendary Second World War fighter plane could be stopping off at the airport.

It's expected it will stay for about an hour and a half before taking to the sky again, giving diners a fantastic view of the aircraft.

The Facebook post said: "We have been led to believe we have a special visitor arriving with us on Friday (weather dependent etc)

"The famous Spitfire is due to land at 16.25 and depart again at 17.55.

"With this in mind we will stay open on Friday till 18.30.

"Please be aware you can see outside from majority of the tables and we have our open outdoor terrace."

A subsequent post said: "We are very busy. We are working through the bookings and most window seats are booked.

"However I can assure you, that you can see the runway and outside from majority of most of our tables and we have a huge outdoor terrace where you can see all views."

The fighter plane played an integral part in the Battle of Britain - a battle fought in the air of the English Channel which, had the Nazis won, would have left Britain defenceless to invasion.
