A FUNDRAISING drive is underway to help pay for new benches so people can enjoy the "stunning" views across the canal in Ellesmere Port.

The GoFundMe page, which has set a target of £1,600 to restore public seating on South Pier Road. has been launched by nearby resident James Baptist.

There used to be four benches along the stretch providing a place for people to sit and take in the views across the Manchester Ship Canal and beyond.

However, there is now just one solitary bench left.

James posted on the fundraising page: "Over the past week myself and (fellow resident) Peter Stelfox have cleared the path from the viewing point next to the boat museum car park down the steps towards the Port and Anchor.

"This is a beautiful part of Ellesmere Port with fantastic views over to Runcorn, Liverpool airport and down the Mersey to Liverpool.

"Sadly only one of the four public benches remains on this stretch and we would like your help to install 3 more so that others can enjoy the stunning views across the Manchester Ship Canal and beyond.

"Any donation is welcome."
