A group of up to 50 teenagers left a trail of vodka bottles, nitrous oxide cannisters, cannabis and other general rubbish on the Wirral coastline this weekend.

Merseyside Police say the group of 14–16-year-olds had been visiting the area before starting a brawl at the platform of West Kirby train station after originally being refused entry on a bus by the driver.

In a statement released by police they said: “As part of Operation Beachsafe, this weekend we had additional officers on duty covering New Brighton and West Kirby areas.

“Friday was a bit damp to say the least, however Saturday saw an improvement in the weather and as expected the crowds visited our lovely coastline.

“Unfortunately, it is always the few who ruin it for others.

“In West Kirby, we had a large group of 40-50 young people (14-16 year olds) visiting the area.”

“Of course, everyone is welcome and we understand people need to let off steam, however there is an expectation for people to be polite and respectful to others, wherever they visit.

“A trail of litter, including vodka bottles, nitrous oxide canisters and cannabis bags were left, along with general rubbish.

“At the end of the night, a bus driver refused to allow a group on the bus, due to their demeanour and there was a fight on the platform/train.

“The group had to leave the train. This behaviour is not acceptable.”

Police are working with partners Youth Matters to engage with young people visiting West Kirby ahead of next weekend when exams and term will end.

They said: “We want this to be a safe and fun weekend for your children.

“We will have additional officers on duty as well as our mounted colleagues.”

Despite the outburst, Police praised residents, Mother Ali and her daughter Gracie, for cleaning up the mess the teenagers left in Ashton Park.

A spokesperson said: “On a happier note, I would like to say a big thankyou to Ali and her daughter Gracie for cleaning up at Ashton Park.

“They are part of Wirral Wombles, with over 2.5K members now, helping to keep our environment clean.”
