A MAN who was pulled out of the canal at Backford has sadly died in hospital.

A major emergency services response was launched this morning following reports of a male in the water.

He was pulled out by the emergency services and taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital where he sadly died.

The man's family have been informed and at this stage police are not treating his death as suspicious.

Cheshire Constabulary said in a statement: "At 9.15am on Sunday 9 May police were called to Backford Bridge, Shropshire Union Canal on the A41 Liverpool Road following reports of a man in the water.

"The man was pulled out of the water by emergency services and was attended to by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital where he sadly died.

"His family has been informed and formal identification is due to take place.

"At this stage police are not treating his death as suspicious.
