A NEW shop selling delicately designed doughnuts has proved to be a sweet success on its first day in Chester city centre.

Socially distanced queues stretched down Frodsham Street from as early as 6am, as customers lined up to get some treats from Planet Doughnut, which opened its doors to the public on Friday, April 30.

Special offers were available to the store's first customers, and Planet Doughnut founder and director Duncan McGregor said the store and its team had received a really warm welcome from the city.

He said: "Planet Doughnut Chester opened with people queueing from 6am to take advantage of the opening deals and the queue was round the block by 10am, with it not really slowing all day.

"We've had such a lovely warm welcome from the people of Chester and retailers alike."

Alluding to the recent Colin vs Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake saga, Duncan added: "Lush and M&S treated the staff to some lovely sweet and scented treats; we're definitely on Colin's side of the fence now!

"I'm so glad we chose Chester for our new flagship store and hope we will be here for many years to come."

The new store offers 20 flavours of doughnuts, including vegan doughnuts, alongside handcrafted shakes and Shropshire roasted Iron and Fire coffee.

Planet Doughnut began life four years ago in Duncan's home kitchen in Shrewsbury, where he was making doughnuts from his wife's nan's jam pan.

The business quickly grew in popularity and they converted the garage into a small bakery, and has since gone from strength to strength to meet ever-growing demand.
