A CHESTER youngster's scarecrow festival has been a big hit in his village.

Six-year-old Edward Napier, who goes to Dodleston Primary School, had decided he wanted to hold a local scarecrow festival after seeing them in nearby villages.

With help from mum Jane Napier, more than 20 scarecrows sprung up around Dodleston thanks to the support of the local community.

Local businesses were able to donate prizes including a box of bakes from Becky Bakes Chester, a large box of sweets from Sugar Rush Flintshire and Cheshire Farm Ice Cream from Dodleston Chapel Stores.

There were also two Easter hampers full of eggs for the first and second prize winners.

Mum Jane said: "We have been absolutely blown away with over 20 entries all over the parish.

"We have seen some very good Boris Johnson representations, and other pandemic related displays. We have also seen some fantastic textile displays from Knitted Betty in Dodleston village to The dry felted ‘Harecrow’ in Gorstella!

"The Hulk made an appearance, as well as a tree surgeon, a dog, a squirrel, and some fabulous family scenes, not to mention Edward’s very own creation, Woody and Jessie from Toy Story!

"It was an incredibly hard decision for our judges, Edward, and his uncle George, who came from Leeds to give an impartial verdict.

"They were delighted to announce the winners: Eva and Ben on their Boris Johnson Pandemic creation winning first prize, and Seren and Megan with their Paddington Bear creation winning second prize.

"So many people came to visit the displays and the village was buzzing with community spirit – something we have all missed.

"Well done Edward for organising such a great event!"
