A CO-op store in Chester has donated cash to a group to help plant bulbs and seeds to attract wildlife at a park.

Staff from the food store on Hoole Road, Chester, presented a cheque for £200 to representatives of Transition Chester to help attract butterflies and moths once the plants have grown.

The Narrows Park Community Group, as part of Transition Chester, has been working hard over the last year to improve the Narrows Park in Hoole for both local residents and wildlife.

They have made various features such as a wildflower meadow that have helped to make Park a place that is becoming more used by local residents and noticeably more inhabited by insects.

Gillian McHattie, coordinator of the Narrows Community Park Project, together with local residents, and in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council, has developed a rolling development plan for the Park. It’s aim is to improve the biodiversity of the park, and thus make it a more interesting place for local residents .

She said: “ We started work two years ago on our long term plan for the Park and last year’s magnificent display in our wildflower meadow gave us lots of inspiration to develop other areas of the park to support wildlife, whilst at the same time creating a much nicer space for local residents to enjoy

"We have now teamed up with Transition Chester who have helped us to access grants and other resources to move our plans forward.

"I would particularly like to thank our three local Ward Councillors, Cllrs. Richard Beecham, Adam Langan, and Gill Watson who have all been extremely helpful in helping us establish liaison with relevant officers of the Council and enabling us to access a bulk delivery of soil improver produced from the domestic green waste collections across the Borough”

Beth Dickson, team manager at the Hoole Road Coop Store, presented the £200 cheque to Catherine Green which was paid from the Coop’s Local Community Fund. This fund is comprised of donations made every time Coop members buy selected Co-op branded products and services to support community organisations and local causes.

She said: “We were pleased to support the Narrows Community Park Project since it is very close to our store here in Hoole and it’s a great example of local people working hard together to enhance their local mini-park."
