FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish a car fire on the M53 motorway near Ellesmere Port on Easter Monday (April 5).

The incident at 5.15pm resulted in the closure of the southbound carriageway at junction 11 (Stoak Interchange), forcing traffic to be diverted on to the M56 up to junction 14.

Three fire engines were deployed to the scene – one from Penketh, one from Warrington and one from Malpas.

On arrival, crews found the vehicle well alight on the hard shoulder.

The motorway had been closed by Highways England when firefighters arrived.

No-one was inside the car and no-one is believed to have been injured by the fire.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus each used a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

The car was then damped down to make it safe.

Temperatures were monitored with a thermal imaging camera.

The car was recovered and firefighters handed the incident over to Highways England.

They were in attendance for less than an hour.
