A CLEAN-UP operation will begin next week to remove litter and debris from the A55 road side verges and embankments.

Chester MP Chris Matheson has spoken of his delight that extensive work to clear the rubbish is set to start.

Cheshire West and Chester Council says the "complex" clean-up operation has been in the planning stages for a while but is now ready for launch.

Mr Matheson said: “I am absolutely over the moon about this, I have been working with local councillors and cabinet members on this for some time and I know it is something residents have been keen to see happen too.

"I cannot believe that some people can simply chuck rubbish out of their vehicle window as they drive along - either they don’t care about our environment or they lack pride in our city.”

Cllr Karen Shore, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport said: “The council spends over £3 million a year collecting litter and cleansing streets in communities across the borough.

"It is such a shame, especially when this money could be used to fund other frontline services.

“The A55 project has been a long time in the planning and is extremely complex due to the importance of the road in our local network.

"There are also obvious safety precautions that need to be in place and additional issues to consider in relation to the pandemic. I am pleased to say that the operation is now planned and ready to go though, so I look forward to seeing the results.”

Cllr Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration, added: “As we look to Chester re-opening its doors to residents and visitors in the coming weeks, I know local people and businesses will be keen for this important route into our city to look smart.

"My heart sinks when I drive down the A55 and see the manner in which people discard their rubbish, despite the real and serious need for us all to do everything we can to improve our environment.”
