A UNION leader says it will use "everything at its disposal" to fight any attempts to close Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant.

John Cooper, the Unite convener at the North Road site, was speaking after parent company Stellantis confirmed that it was considering "different scenarios" for the future of the factory.

The carmaker added that discussions with UK officials have been "productive but not conclusive".

It is understood that the company is looking at making electric vehicles at Ellesmere Port, which employs around 1,000 people, and expects a "binding commitment" from the Government in the near future.

It has been reported that Stellantis is seeking financial incentives from the Government, which would deteRmine the fate of the plant, along with commitments on the post-Brexit trade of auto parts including batteries.

Mr Cooper said: “Unite will fight any attempt to close the car plant with everything at its disposal.

“The long-term future of the Vauxhall plant is essential to the success of the entire North West economy.

"Up to 7,000 workers in the supply chain rely on the plant for their livelihoods.

“It would be entirely unforgivable if the Government failed to provide every possible assistance and support in securing the future of this critical plant.”

A Government spokesperson said yesterday: "We are committed to ensuring the UK continues to be one of the best locations in the world for automotive manufacturing, and we’re doing all we can to protect and create jobs, while securing a competitive future for the sector.

"We regularly speak with all automotive companies, including Stellantis but do not comment on ongoing discussions."
