CHILDREN at Acresfield Academy in Chester will have a hoot when they return to school to find a new log cabin – dubbed The Owls’ Nest.

The skilfully handcrafted log cabin has been designed to enhance the Chester primary’s forest school provision.

It will give pupils a new base to play and learn in, providing shelter as well as an attractive focal point for outdoor activities.

Headteacher Mike Dixon said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming all the children back soon after such a difficult year, and this will be something positive and exciting waiting to greet them.

“The Owls’ Nest will support their learning and social development, and bring everyone together in our wonderful outdoor space.”

The nest, which includes the school's owl logo at the entrance, was created by North West Academies Trust’s (NWAT) site manager Nigel Little.

It will be the second time children return from lockdown to find an exciting new addition.

Following the first lockdown, children were surprised with a new £20,000 astroturf surface, thanks to a grant from Aldi, topped up with funds raised by the PTA.

Mr Dixon added: “All of the staff are working incredibly hard to engage the children remotely with their learning, but it is not the same as having them here in school.

“The response from all our families has been great, and feedback has been extremely positive, but we can’t wait to welcome children back - I’m sure the smiles will be as big as they were last time!”

The primary joined NWAT two years ago and is benefitting from sharing ideas and best practice with schools such as Delamere Academy, near Northwich, and St Martin’s Academy, Chester, which are both also rated ‘outstanding’.

Steve Docking, CEO of NWAT, said: “Acresfield is a hugely successful school and continues to ensure, even in these challenging times, that it meets the needs of all its pupils.

“We feel very proud of what they, and all our other schools, have achieved.”
