SEVEN of the ten council wards with the highest Covid-19 infection rate are in Ellesmere Port, according to the latest figures.

The data, available on Cheshire West and Chester Council's dedicated coronavirus information portal, shows that there are no Chester wards in the top ten.

The most up-to-date figures cover the seven-day period from January 21-27.

Since early January, the infection rate for the whole of the Cheshire West and Chester area has steadily declined and now stands at 293.8 per 100,000 people.

The rate had peaked at 625.5 during the week-long period of December 29 to January 4.

Here are the ten Cheshire West and Chester Council wards with the highest Covid-19 infection rates per 100,000 people:

  • Winsford Dene (25 cases, 567.02 infection rate)
  • Strawberry (29 cases, 539.40 infection rate)
  • Winsford Swanlow (24 cases, 485.63 infection rate)
  • Whitby Groves (20 cases, 476.30 infection rate)
  • Central & Grange (52 cases, 472.90 infection rate)
  • Netherpool (26 cases, 468.81 infection rate)
  • Sutton Villages (47 cases, 427.86 infection rate)
  • Wolverham (23 cases, 415.54 infection rate)
  • Winsford Over & Verdin (59 cases, 412.85 infection rate)
  • Ledsham & Manor (35 cases, 386.53 infection rate)

Blacon is the Chester ward with the highest infection rate with 343.17, which is the 14th highest in the borough.

That was one spot below Malpas which has a rate of 369.81, and one above Newton & Hoole which stands at 320.83.

Upton has the 19th highest infection rate with 308.83, one place above Neston which stands at 299.77.

The following wards are among the top ten with the lowest infection rates in the borough: Farndon (66.47), Parkgate (122.27), Lache (154.77), Frodsham (182.97) and Chester City & The Garden Quarter (214.58).
