CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has now reported more than 2,000 confirmed new Covid cases in a week.

The latest Public Health England data revealed that 2,042 people in the borough tested positive for coronavirus between December 28, 2020 and January 3, 2021.

That has meant the infection rate has increased to 595 cases per 100,000 people for that week alone.

By contrast, one month ago the infection rate for the area was hovering at around 100 cases per 100,000.

Soaring infection rates across the UK have led to the current coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

The Cheshire west ward with the highest infection rate is Strawberry (73 positive cases December 28-January 3), which has recorded an infection rate of 1,406.3.

That is followed by Lache (77 positive cases, infection rate 1,324.2) and Blacon (134 positive cases, infection rate 978.4).

Other wards to record more than 100 positive cases in a week are Newton and Hoole (119), Chester City and the Garden Quarter (113), and Christleton and Huntington (104).
