MERSEYRAIL says it does not expect to run any services tomorrow (January 8) as a result of the "adverse weather conditions" forecast to hit the area.

The operator has also confirmed that due to the "expected scale of disruption" providing replacement bus services for its entire network is "not an option."

It said customers should make alternative travel arrangements, adding that season tickets will be accepted by Arriva, Stagecoach and Mersey Ferries.

Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders says the news that replacement bus services will not be provided is "very disappointing".

In a Twitter exchange with Merseyrail, he posted: "This is very disappointing. We know the bus operators are on reduced services anyway so additional passengers is going to cause difficulties in getting everyone on board and keeping social distancing.

"Are you really saying you are offering no alternative?"

Merseyrail responded: "Unfortunately due to the expected scale of disruption providing rail replacement busses for the entire network is not an option.

"We are working closely with our partners at Stagecoach and Arriva and season tickets will be accepted on their services.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and if we are able to safely run trains tomorrow we will. We advise passengers to follow our social media for the latest information."

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for ice and snow which will be in place until midnight tomorrow.
