A MAN who broke two bones when he punched and smashed a Frodsham hotel window while drunk on vodka has been fined.

David Stephen Robinson, 35, had been staying at the Best Western Forest Hills Hotel on the night of December 19, 2020, drinking alcohol with his partner, Chester Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday, January 5.

It was at about 8.30am on December 20 when the hotel receptionist was made aware of broken glass outside a hotel room, and saw the window had been smashed.

Robinson, of Adamson Close, Latchford, Warrington, answered the door at the hotel room and admitted he had damaged the window and agreed to pay the repairs.

But Robinson left without paying for the window and police were alerted.

Robinson had pleaded guilty to criminal damage at the first opportunity when he appeared in court.

In police interview, Robinson said he was "10 out of 10 drunk" after drinking vodka with his partner that night and he had got into an argument, becoming so annoyed he punched and smashed the window.

He had his right arm in a cast and had broken two bones.

The hotel manager had estimated the value of the damage as between £2,000 and £2,500.

Robinson added he was sorry for causing the damage.

He had four previous convictions for five offences, including one for criminal damage from 2003.

Defending, Derek McDonald said Robinson "did not recall a great deal" of that night, but had put his arm through the window, causing a "nasty injury to himself" and putting him in a cast for four to six weeks.

The defendant was normally a self-employed builder and was looking to put the incident behind him.

Chair of magistrates Andrew Merrill said they found the £2,000 cost "a little excessive" and, in the absence of evidence to substantiate that cost, instead ordered Robinson to pay the hotel £650 compensation.

Robinson was also fined £100. Due to the compensation, no order for court costs or a victim surcharge was made.
