RYAN REYNOLDS and Rob McElhenney did their homework about wanting to re-live Wrexham Football Club’s past glories.

And their wish is our command as here are pictures of a jam-packed Racecourse ground, fans on the pitch, celebrating promotion and lifting the Division Three title with Arfon Griffiths’ sensational 1977/78 side.

Despite the desperate disappointment of throwing away a promotion in the last two games of the 1976/77 campaign and then losing manager and star striker Billy Ashcroft to Middlesbrough, Griffiths - dubbed the Prince of Wales by Wrexham fans - more than made the most of his change as the Reds’ new player boss.

They didn’t get off to the best of starts and had only won one in seven league games before Griffiths splashed the cash to bring in lower league goal machine Dixie McNeil and Welsh international goalkeeper Dai Davies.

McNeil scored on his debut against Swindon on September 24 and it was three months - a 2-1 defeat at Bradford City on Boxing Day - before Wrexham lost a game again.

Marvellous runs to the quarter-final stages of the FA Cup and League Cup dovetailed Wrexham’s imperious league form where they won seven league games on the bounce in March, culminating in a 4-1 win at Carlisle where Graham Whittle scored all four goals.

Whittle scored 24 in all competitions, McNeil topped that with 25 - including an incredible 11 FA Cup goals while the brilliant Bobby Shinton also hit 24.

Promotion was secured in some style on April 22 - a 7-1 romp at home to Rotherham where 16,586 fans went crazy.

There were 23,451 in the ground nine days later to see captain Gareth Davies hold aloft the title - and oh, how we long for those days again.
