MICKEY THOMAS has been given the latest all-clear in his amazing battle to beat cancer but now he wants his beloved Wrexham to be handed a clean bill of health.

Thomas was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus almost two years ago. He admitted it was touch and go whether he survived.

But the 65-year-old former Wrexham, Manchester United and Wales star has made a miraculous recovery after life-saving surgery to remove the tumour.

And after his latest six-monthly check up, Thomas revealed: “I’ve had another all-clear to say that everything’s good. It’s brilliant news. Now we need some brilliant news for Wrexham and I hope it comes in the way of this takeover.”

Hollywood film stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney told Wrexham fans their vision for the future in an online presentation last night.

They want to buy the club and plough in £2m straight away in what Thomas describes as a ‘too good to be true’ scenario.

More than 2,000 Trust members of the fans-owned club will vote this week on whether they want to give the thumbs up to the Reds American revolution.

Thomas, who made almost 300 appearances in two spells at The Racecourse, hopes the deal does go through and that Wrexham Football Club can finally get back into the Football League.

“The football has been dismal, an embarrassment over the years,” said Thomas. “The recruitment has been poor from management to players and where has all that money from the Danny Ward transfer gone?

“Everyone knows a lot of money has been wasted and this offer from America could not have come at a better time.

“The club is crying out for some stability. The fans deserve that. I hope the takeover comes off. It has to for the good of the club.”

Thomas has been a critic of Wrexham’s style of play over the years and said watching the Reds’ 1-0 home defeat to Maidenhead live on BT Sport last month hadn’t changed his opinion.

“It’s a good job the fans aren’t in the ground because they’d be going mad,” added Thomas, who lists a fantastic free-kick in one of the greatest FA Cup giant-killings of all-time against Arsenal in 1992 as one of his Wrexham highlights.

“Everyone knows in football that if you get it right on the pitch, everything else around a football club falls into place and takes care of itself. That’s what Wrexham have to do and if they’re throwing in £2m for starters, then you’ve a chance.

“Promotion at the most looks like a miracle. That Maidenhead match was awful and I know we won at Yeovil. But they were the worst team I’ve seen and being in the bottom two proves that.”

Thomas, a member of the famous 1977/78 promotion winning side, believes the prospective owners must turn to another Reds legend, Joey Jones, to give his valuable experience on how the club, who have been in non-league football for 12 years, should move forward.

“That would be my first bit of advice to them, get Joey Jones back the club. He loves the club, he loves the fans and the fans love him,” he said. “He has a connection with not only the cub but the town and that’s so important. He is also so knowledgeable about the game. He’s a proper footballing man and that’s what the club needs.”

Many claim Thomas should also give his valued input as should a number of former Wrexham greats, who graced the hallowed Racecourse turf over the years.

He hasn’t heard from the mega-star duo but Thomas - Wrexham’s Mr Box Office himself - admits he’s thrilled at the prospect of the Reds being owned by two film stars.

“It is amazing news for the club and the fans,” he added.

“People say why Wrexham? I don’t particularly care why. Just as long as it happens because the club needs a change in direction.

“I couldn’t sleep when I first heard the news. I was so excited.

“Since the news broke six weeks ago, there’s been a media frenzy while supporters can’t wait for the new exciting chapter in the club’s history.

“It is great for the fans. They deserve a change in fortunes and, who knows, this might be it.

“It’s an amazing story and one everyone across the world is talking about. I’ve done an interview on American radio talking about it and can you imagine what it will be like when the two guys come to a game.

“We all know that they’ve said they will put two million into the club and after looking what Fleetwood and Forest Green have done in the past to get out of non-league and on a bigger scale what big-spending has done to make Manchester City winners, this could be incredible for Wrexham Football Club.

“I loved the headline From Hollywood to Boreham Wood on the Leader’s website. But this story is almost unbelievable. Wrexham fans must think they are in dreamland, I do.”
