NOVEMBER 8 is going to be one of the momentous occasions in Wrexham Football Club’s history but has it been a lucky day over the years for the Reds?

Nine defeats in the 17 games they’ve played on that day doesn’t make good reading but the last time Wrexham played on November 8 more than makes up for that.

Captain Shaun Pearson (pictured left) scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 National League win at fierce cross-border rivals Chester.

Back in 1972, Wrexham’s first excursion in European football ended in the old Yugoslavia as the 2-0 defeat at Hadjuk Split saw John Neal’s side knocked out on the away goals rule.

Mel Sutton was in the side that night and he liked scoring on this day - the only goal at home to Bury in 1975 and the consolation one in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday five years later.

Another Reds star, Dixie McNeil, who will be all-ears on Sunday in his role as a Reds director, was boss when Jon Bowden and Andy Thackeray netted in a 2-0 win at home to Stockport County in 1988.

And to complete a trilogy of players-turned-managers, the great Arfon Griffiths scored from the spot with Ray Smith also on target in a 2-0 win against Notts County at The Racecourse in 1969.

November 6 over the years has also brought more misery, including a 1-0 FA Cup third qualifying round defeat at Buckley United back in 1920.

Buckley were members of the Liverpool Zingari League and won the Welsh Amateur Cup twice.

Two European Cups Winners Cup exits are the story on November 7 - one to Roma in 1984 and the other against Manchester United in 1990.
