MANCHESTER UNITED scouts were watching as Mickey Thomas scored his fourth goal in five games on this day back in 1978.
Thomas was joined on the scoresheet by Dixie McNeil and Graham Whittle in Wrexham’s 3-1 home win over Notts County in Division Two and weeks later he moved to Old Trafford for a club record £300,000 fee.
Thomas, pictured left with United boss Dave Sexton, made his Red Devils debut on November 25 in a 1-0 win at Chelsea - a club he would become a fans' favourite at, alongside his old mate Joey Jones, later in his career.
Apart from a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth in 1997 when strikers Neil Roberts and Dean Spink netted and a 3-0 hammering of Huddersfield in 1974 courtesy of goals from Brian Tinnion, Dave Smallman and Geoff Davies, there’s very little else for Reds fans to shout about on November 4.
Although in the days when Wrexham used to reach the first round of the FA Cup in 1961, 10,833 saw Mickey Metcalf score twice in a 3-2 victory over Barrow. Wyn Davis scored the other.
NOVEMBER 4 RECORD: P 21; W 7; D 6; L 8
