KWAME THOMAS insists there is more to his game than goals - but the striker admits opening his Wrexham account is a huge confidence-booster going into tonight's clash with Maidenhead United.

Summer signing Thomas, who finished last term at Burton Albion and has also played for the likes of Notts County, Blackpool, Coventry, Solihull and Doncaster since starting his career with Derby, scored the only goal as Wrexham won 1-0 against Yeovil Town at Huish Park on Saturday.

On target for his new club in pre-season, Thomas says it was important to get that first league goal as quickly as possible for the Reds and he hopes it is the first of many.

“I am delighted to get my first league goal for Wrexham,” said Thomas.

“As a striker you always want to get off the mark, especially when you are at a new club.

“It is alright scoring goals in pre-season but getting that first one in the league is a big confidence boost for myself.

“God willing, it is the first of many goals that I score for Wrexham.”

Thomas has not been the most prolific striker in his career but although the frontman has a lot more to offer with his all-round game, he believes more goals will come if he continues to work hard.

“I have always done the other side but as a striker, ultimately you get judged on goals,” said Thomas.

“Even though I have always contributed to a lot to wins, it has been: ‘but he has only scored this many goals’.

“That is the side I have been working on and making sure for all the hard work that I do, that I am getting my rewards.

“That will benefit the team and help us reach our goal.”

Thomas got off the mark after converting right-back Reece Hall-Johnson’s low cross from close range.

“It was a great ball by Reece,” said Thomas.

“It is something we have been working on in training, making sure someone is getting across the front, someone is in the middle and someone is at the back.

“I seen there was a gap at the back so I just finished off my run and when there are balls like that, you can’t really miss.”

Wrexham dominated the first half and could have led by more than Thomas’s 10th minute strike.

Although Yeovil had a good spell of pressure after the break, the Reds also had more chances but one goal was enough to register a first ever win against the Glovers.

And Thomas admits Wrexham could have killed the game by scoring more goals when on top.

“We played some good stuff on both sides,” said Thomas.

“We were aggressive and on the front foot. It was good when we went long, when we went short and passing it was a good combination.

“It was one of our better games so far this season so we have set the standard now and hopefully we can keep that up now and be more clinical.

“Games like that we could have put to bed earlier.”

Wrexham have now won two of their opening three games, adding to the opening day victory over Boreham Wood.

Dean Keates’ side host bottom of the table Maidenhead United tonight and although Thomas won’t take the Magpies for granted, he is looking to make it a hat-trick of wins.

“All three teams we have played so far you would say are top teams in this division,” said Thomas.

“To get six out of nine points is a good return.

“Obviously we would have preferred nine points, that is just being greedy, but we will take it and try and add another three points on Monday.

“Nine points from four games, you wouldn’t complain about that.”
