THE A41 on the outskirts of Chester is currently closed in both directions following a diesel spillage caused by a collision involving two HGVs.

A section of the road at Rowton heading towards Christleton was shut at around 2.30pm today (September 28).

Firefighters were called to the scene after a lorry, containing 200 litres of fuel, began leaking.

Cheshire Police confirmed that the fire service have contained the leak and highways have since been called to assist with the clean-up operation.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to reports of fuel spillage on the A41 near Whitchurch Road in Rowton.

"The spillage involves around 200 litres of diesel on the road following a collision between two HGVs.

"A cordon has been set up and specialist absorbent pads are being used to clear the fuel.

"Crews have emptied the fuel tank and a hose reel has been set up as a precaution in case it ignites.

"The road has been closed. Police and Highways are also in attendance."

Cheshire Constabulary's Chester Villages Police account posted on Facebook: "There may be traffic delays around the A41 Christleton and Rowton area this afternoon which is being dealt with as swiftly as possible.

"Please bare with us and try to find an alternative route if possible."
