TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular former market stallholder.
Edith Stewart died peacefully at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on July 27. She was 93.
Mrs Stewart, a grandmother-of-eight and a great grandmother-of-three, was well known for running the Treasure Island stall in Wrexham's old Vegetable Market.
Her daughter Margaret Cunniffe told the Leader: "She was a housewife for many years and had a part time job, but when the opportunity to buy the stall came up she took it and never looked back. "She had a good assortment of quality toys and did some sports gear as well, like tennis rackets.
"She was very well known.
"She saw different generations coming to her stall too - she'd sell toys to someone and then they'd bring their children and grandchildren."
Mrs Stewart had three children; Margaret, Glyn and Brian.
Glyn died in 2015, aged 68, and Brian died in 2016, aged 64.
Mrs Cunniffe said: "We all used to help her out at the shop.
"She had a challenging job, because she used to go to various warehouses in Manchester to collect the toys - and toy shows in Brighton and Harrogate.
"She had a very good working life but her priority was always her children. She was very good with us."
Mrs Stewart, originally from Bradley, was married twice - first to Ronald Jones, who died in 1988, and then to John Stewart (known as Ian), who died in 2006.
Speaking of her mother's character, Mrs Cunniffe, 75, said: "She still lived at home, even though she was 93. "She was very independent and very much a family woman.
"She had a big character - outgoing but not loud - and loved sewing and ballroom dancing.
"She managed right through to the very end and had a life very well lived."
