ROADWORKS in Chester city centre are to continue until mid-September as part of the first phase of a drainage network upgrade.

There has been traffic disruption on the city's dual carriageway – Nicholas Street – in both directions, with lane closures by the new ongoing Northgate Development work.

Now Cheshire West and Chester Council has advised nearby residents of a series of road closures which it says may cause disruption.

A letter to residents said: "Over the coming weeks Cheshire West and Chester Council are undertaking preparatory site investigations along the route for the forthcoming city centre drainage tunnel.

"These investigations are necessary infrastructure works prior to the main works starting later in the autumn.

"Our highways teams are working very closely with the contractors to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

"However, some traffic congestion is inevitable especially at peak times.

"A certain amount of inconvenience is inevitable with work of this type and we would greatly appreciate your patience whilst the works are being undertaken."

The works taking place over the next few weeks are:

  • Grosvenor Roundabout – single lane closure on roundabout and Grosvenor Road – until July 31.
  • University and court (former County Hall) car park – until August 7
  • Nicholas Street – single lane closures in both directions – August 3-7
  • Nuns Road – closure southbound only – August 6-10
  • Castle Drive – closure from Grosvenor Road to Little Roodee Car Park entrance – August 10-September 14.
