A NEW health centre and apartments in Blacon have moved a step closer now that work has started on construction.

Sanctuary Homes has begun the development of 16 new apartments, a GP surgery and health centre on land next to the existing Parade Enterprise Centre.

Planning permission was granted last year but work on the project was delayed due to the closure of development sites during the coronavirus pandemic.

The GP surgery and health centre will ensure the Blacon community has access to medical facilities on their doorstep, something that has been welcomed by City of Chester MP Chris Matheson.

On the two storeys above the surgery and health centre there will be 12 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent, further increasing the provision of affordable housing in the community.

Sanctuary’s senior development manager, Danielle Wrigley, said: “We have been eagerly awaiting the green light to begin construction at The Parade and are thrilled to finally be able to deliver this project.

“It will be of major benefit to Blacon and the wider community and we are looking forward to seeing it take shape.”

Chris Matheson MP commented: “I am really pleased to see this new surgery, health centre and homes coming to fruition and bringing vital facilities to the heart of Blacon.

“Having spoken to many local people, I know this is something they have wanted for a long time and I’m delighted to see Sanctuary Homes and Cheshire West and Chester Council working together to make it a reality.”

Councillor Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Growth, Cheshire West and Chester Council, added: “I am really excited that this development is finally getting underway. People in Blacon have been really patient, but the wait has certainly been worth it.

“This project is a huge boost for the community and continues a programme of work which has extensively transformed The Parade in recent years. When complete, this development will further enhance the area as well as bring new employment opportunities to the area.”

The health centre and apartments are being constructed adjacent to the Parade Enterprise Centre, which is managed by Avenue Services.
