ELLESMERE PORT and Neston MP Justin Madders has welcomed reforms to tackle some of the key issues facing leaseholders in the town and to transform home ownership for millions of people across the country.

The proposed reforms would make it easier and cheaper for homeowners to buy the freehold or extend their lease, and to take control of the management of their block of flats or an estate.

They would also improve commonhold to ensure it is the preferred alternative to leasehold as a way of owning homes.

There are 4.3 million leasehold homes across England, including many in Ellesmere Port and across the North West.

The Ellesmere Port MP has played a leading role in Parliament in the campaign for leasehold reform, including securing a ban on the future sale of houses on a leasehold basis, introducing a Private Members Bill, and co-chairing the All Party Parliamentary Group for Leasehold and Commonhold reform.

Mr Madders said: “I welcome this report, it has been a long time coming and is a much-needed roadmap for reform of the leasehold sector.

"Over the last four years we have had many promises and statements from Government about leasehold reform but very little in terms of progress.”

“Now is the time for them to bring forward legislation as a priority so that those who are stuck in leasehold houses are given the opportunity to be released from the unfair obligations imposed on them as a result of an archaic and unjustified system.”
