A BLAZE involving 100 tonnes of wood and scrap metal damaged five vehicles at a commercial garage in Frodsham.

Firefighters spent four hours tackling the flames at the rear of the premises in Norley Road, Frodsham.

Four engines – two from Runcorn, one from Widnes and one from Tarporley – were called to the scene shortly after midnight (July 21).

The owner of the commercial garage assisted the crews by using a JCB to remove debris from the fire.

The road was closed by police while the blaze was tackled.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival crews discovered a fire involving around 100 tonnes of wood and scrap metal approximately 20 metres behind a commercial garage.

"The fire had spread to motor vehicles. A water supply was set up and firefighters, including two wearing breathing apparatus, used three hose reel jets and two main jets to fight the fire.

"The road was closed by the police as firefighters tackled the fire.

"The owner of the commercial garage used a JCB to remove debris from the fire. They also used it to turn over the wood and scrap metal involved in the blaze.

"This revealed a deep seated fire amongst a large pile of wooden joists. When there were no visible signs of fire crews used a thermal imaging camera to look for hotspots.

"They damped any hotspots and the area affected by the fire down to make the scene safe.

"Five motor vehicles were damaged as a result of the fire.

"Once they were satisfied that the area was safe firefighters left the scene. They were in attendance for around four hours.

"No-one is believed to have been injured as a result of the fire."
