TWO police officers were taken to hospital after being assaulted while making an arrest in Ellesmere Port.

The incident happened on Westminster Road at about 8.30am today (July 20).

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and on suspicion of two counts of assaulting an emergency services worker.

A second man, aged 22, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

One of the police officers remains in hospital, while the other has since been released.

A Cheshire Constabulary statement said: "At around 8.30am on Monday 20 July police were called to reports of two men acting aggressively on Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port.

"Officers attended the scene and arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage.

"A second man, aged 23, fled the scene and was chased by officers on foot.

"Officers subsequently located the man and was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. During the arrest two officers were assaulted.

"The man was also arrested on suspicion of two counts of assaulting an emergency services worker.

"Both officers were taken to hospital to be checked over – one has been released and one remains in hospital at this time."
