A CHESTER shop owner has presented her pop music hero with a spectacular cake display in his honour.
Jules Smith, who runs the Cake Chester shop on Bridge Street Row, crafted the fantastic cake tribute to singer Limahl – who was top of the pops in 1983 with his band Kajagoogoo and the smash hit 'Too Shy'.
After speculatively messaging the hit singer on social media to see what he thought of it, the pair began messaging and it led to Limahl paying a visit to the store on Friday, July 17 to see it up close.
Limahl said he was very impressed with the cake, which shows the singer as he appeared on the Kajagoogoo video for the single ‘Ooh To Be Ah’, which reached Number 7 in the UK charts.
Adorning the figure of Limahl on the cake is a collage of album, single and publicity photos past and present.
Limahl – real name Christopher Hamill – said: "The detail is amazing. No-one has ever made me a cake like this before!"
Jules, who has designed cakes in honour of other famous faces including Stormzy, said: "This goes back a long way for me. I used to have posters of Limahl all over my bedroom wall. Who would think that all these years later he would be in my shop?
"I was shocked when he said he would come. It's amazing, it feels so surreal."
The pair have also decided to raise money for a good cause, with a replica of the superb sponge and chocolate cake display to be auctioned off in aid of the Countess of Chester Hospital's new Blue Skies Balcony appeal, for the benefit of Intensive Care Unit patients being treated there.
Limahl – whose new single 'Still in Love' is out now and the video is on YouTube – added of Chester as a whole: "I have nice memories of it, it's a very pretty city with wonderful architecture. My mum used to come here with her caravan."
Limahl stayed to sign autographs and pose for socially-distance-safe selfies with visitors to the store, before taking his mum out for a sunny afternoon around Chester.
