The incident happened shortly after 8.30am with Wirral Line services returning to normal not long after 9am.
Merseyrail said due to 'an act of disorder' on board a train at Birkenhead Central, the service running from Ellesmere Port to Liverpool came to a standstill at the station before eventually being cancelled.
The subsequent Moorfields to Ellesmere Port service was also cancelled.
National Rail confirmed shortly after 9am that all trains were now running normally.
British Transport Police said they were not called to the incident at Birkenhead Central.
