INDOOR markets in west Cheshire – including Chester Market and Ellesmere Port Market – are due to reopen fully to the public next month.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed that, subject to an official go-ahead from the Government and the completion of risk assessments, all indoor markets will be reopened fully from June 15.

Presently, places such as Chester Market have been open solely for people to purchase essential food and groceries, as part of the coronavirus lockdown rules. Areas of Chester Market were cordoned off for the safety of customers and traders, while a delivery service has been set up to help those self-isolating.

But from Monday, June 15, all non-essential retailers will be allowed to trade, which will mean the return of several market stalls from traders who had no option but to close at the onset of the lockdown.

Shopping at the indoor markets won't return to normal, however, as people will still be expected to follow social distancing guidelines, and events such as the popular Chester Market Foodie Friday will not be returning anytime soon.

To ensure safe shopping, the council has confirmed a number of measures have been put in place at its indoor markets.

A CWaC spokesperson said: "There are social distancing stickers on the market floor (these will be laid at all markets) in readiness of opening further stalls and hand sanitisers will be available.

"Trader and staff guidance will be provided prior to opening.

"The opening hours are being considered and also staggered arrivals of traders to observe social distancing."

In the case of Chester Market, the spokesperson added: "Tables and chairs have been removed from the seating area (this was done prior to the lockdown), and food offers will be takeaway or delivery, only, in the short term following government guidelines.

"Events such as foodie Friday aren't possible at the moment."

In addition, it is understood there will be a one-way system in place when The Port Arcades – which adjoins Ellesmere Port Market – fully reopens.
