SUPERMARKET chain Iceland says it has 'no current plans' to open a new food store at Chester Retail Park.

The store was potentially set to replace the units occupied by Sports Direct and Outfit, according to a planning application.

Last week, the Chester Retail Park owners had an application approved by Cheshire West and Chester Council for a Lawful Development Certificate, which confirms that units 5b and 6 can be used for the sale of food.

It stated in the application, submitted at the end of last year, that the site owners wanted to 'ensure the unit can be let to a food retailer, such as Iceland, upon the lease expiry of the present tenants'.

However, a spokesperson for Iceland confirmed today: "We have no current plans to open a store at Chester Retail Park."

The Standard understands that Sports Direct will continue to operate from its existing unit. Outfit has now closed for good.
