A MAN from the Wirral had to be rescued from Snowdonia after becoming stuck.

It comes as crowds flocked to Snowdonia despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for people to self-isolate and only travel when necessary.

The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) were called on Sunday to reports of the man becoming stuck on steep ground on the south ridge of Pen Yr Ole Wen.

A spokesperson said: "He had headed up the ridge but was unfamiliar with the route and had tried to bypass a steep gully and become stuck, sensibly he had remained where he was and called for help.

"Once it was checked that he had no symptoms of Covid 19, three team members were deployed with rope rescue equipment while the remainder of the team waited at home to assist if required. On arrival, the man was questioned again about Corona symptoms and then, one team member went forward with a rope and he was helped back to the path where he was confidence roped down to safe ground.

"During the descent a second pair of walkers were found to be bum sliding down after 1 of the became scared and they had to turn around.

"The team would like to re-emphasise that people should observe current social distancing guidelines and not to go on the hills if you have symptoms of Covid 19 or are in your 14 day self isolating period.

"If you can get out, stay within your abilities and think about not trying new routes or grades and to stay safe in light of the current situation. Some of the team are key workers and rescues may be delayed through lack of availability or you may be advised to stay where you are until daylight if the team decides it's too risky to deploy."
