YOUNGSTERS at a Chester primary school have taken a trip back in time to the Viking era.

Year 5 children at Hoole Church of England Primary welcomed Olaf the Viking into school for a memorable day, learning about the origins and culture of Vikings.

Olaf taught them about day-to-day life, recounting stories about Viking voyages and adventures in long boats.

Children had the opportunity to handle Viking-related artefacts and participate in a battle against Anglo-Saxons.

Prior to Olaf’s visit, children researched Viking clothing and many even came dressed in Viking attire for the day.

Mrs Salisbury, teacher at the school, said: “The children engaged so enthusiastically with this learning experience. Olaf commended them on their excellent behaviour and the quality of the research they had undertaken in preparation for his visit.”

Mrs Kelly, Year 5 teacher, added: “We are keen to ensure that learning is made memorable for our pupils. I am sure that the children will remember their encounter with Olaf for a long time.”

Children are now planning to use this experience to enrich their work including writing stories based in the Viking era which will be shared to motivate and inspire younger pupils.
