A FLINTSHIRE walking group has celebrated its fifteenth anniversary this month.
The Community Walks Hawarden Group took a walk down memory lane on January 17 as they celebrated the milestone event’.
Colin Herbert and Jean Cole had put in lots of time and effort to already have a menu of walks around the village planned.
On that first morning of January 7, 2006, two walkers turned up in St Deiniols car park and that was the start.
A spokesman for the group said: “From that day on thanks to the work of Colin and Jean, and more and more leaders as time went on, the walk has grown and grown and provided support to the physical and psychological health of the community.
“Soon the walks outgrew St Deiniols and moved to being hosted by Heather at the Institute where we remain to this day.
“There were, until recently, monthly walks from the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ewloe. We were originally under the wing of Walkabout Flintshire.
“In 2010 Hawarden became an independent self-funding walking group, supported by Hawarden Community Council.
“Soon there were satellite groups in Broughton & Bretton, Higher Kinnerton and Shotton, which are flourishing today.
“We thank everyone who has supported us along the way and look forward to helping people stay fitter and happier than they might otherwise have been.”
