A SIXTH form student at a Chester high school has received a top mathematics award for their outstanding progress.

The Michael Ord Award for mathematics is a particularly important and meaningful memorial award presented each year at Queen's Park High School to one of its students who has made outstanding progress in their mathematical studies.

This year’s worthy recipient is Year 12 student Ioan Gwenter.

The award is presented in honour and memory of Michael Ord, a former Queen’s Park High school student who sadly passed away from meningitis in 1994 at the age of just 14.

The school was delighted that Michael’s mother, Anne Ord, was able to present the award this year at the Year 11 Celebration Evening.

Sarah Blears-Chalmers, curriculum leader for mathematics, said: “Ioan has shown amazing commitment to his studies, achieving the highest grades in GCSE mathematics and further maths.

"He is a thoughtful mathematician who is inquisitive and enjoys the challenge of maths problems. We are all thrilled he has been recognised for this award.”
